The 2-dollar coin, or 'Toonie', as Canadians have named it, features the image of an adult polar bear in early summer on an ice floe. It was designed by wildlife and landscape artist Brent Townsend. The 2-dollar coin was first introduced on February 19, 1996, to replace the 2-dollar bill.

The new Canadian toonie is here for 2020 and it marks a pretty big anniversary in the country’s history.

The coin, which is inspired by the 1943-45 Victory Nickel, features a large “V” for “Victory” on the inner core, a flaming torch, maple leaves, and the dates 1945 and 2020. The original Victory Nickel message “We win when we work willingly” is also included in the outer ring of the coin in Morse code.

All of this is reminiscent of the call to support the war effort back in the day.

Keeping the story alive.

“For nearly six years, Canadians serving in uniform or chipping in at home played a vital role in achieving a hard-won peace,” said Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence Lawrence MacAulay in a press release.

“They have our enduring thanks, and I hope we can all live up to that legacy as this coin changes hands from one generation to the next.”
